Virology Lab

  • The Virus Research Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) is a BSL level 2 laboratory attached to Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospitals.
  • It was established in July 2020 to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic catering to the needs of patients in and around Seeragapadi, Salem.
  • Our VRDL is NABL accredited and ICMR-approved laboratory with the sophisticated facility to perform all types of molecular assays.
  • We have tested around 8000 samples and served the community during the pandemic, guiding the clinicians in effective patient management.
  • The laboratory is strictly configured to maintain the unidirectional flow of movement.
  • The extraction room with a biosafety cabinet and centrifuge, cleanroom for master mix preparation room and amplification and room for real-time detection of nucleic acid are each equipped with a supply of PPE, multi-channel pipette and other equipment and consumables to prevent contamination. 
  • An exit room for doffing PPE is available for increased biosafety to ensure a strictly unidirectional movement and prevent contamination of administrative and office areas. 
  • A well-demarcated sample reception area is also available.
  • Scholarly experts manage it with the support of well-trained technicians and other support staff who have undergone hands-on training in molecular tests.
  • Quality assurance is emphasised along the entire testing pathway. Pre-analytical conditions are addressed by closely monitoring proper specimen collection, handling and transport. 
  • All equipment’s calibrated and maintained to ensure optimal working condition. 
  • Quality control is ensured in each run using appropriate positive, negative and internal controls. 
  • Data was also collected and analysed to monitor key performance indicators such as turnaround time, positivity and specimen rejection rates.
  • Infection prevention and control measures are in place with close monitoring of its implementation at all stages.  
  • All the staff in the molecular lab are committed to providing quality, accurate and fast reports for the benefit of patients and clinicians.
